Australia 2008-P World Youth Day Sydney featuring Pope Benedict XVI Coin and Stamp Set with $1 Dollar with Color Official First Day Cover FDC

The Perth Mint  and Australia Post have teamed up to create this coin and stamp set that commemorates the Papal visit during World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia. World Youth Day is a Roman Catholic youth-oriented festival, started by Pope John Paul II in 1986, and celebrated internationally every two or three years. The 2008 event, held in July in Sydney was attended by Pope Benedict XVI, his first visit toAustralia, and drew a reported 500,000 young people from around the world to celebrate with the Pope.

This handsome set will please both numismatists and philatelists (coin & stamps collectors, respectively) as well as anyone with an interest in history, religion, or a Catholic background. With superb features and value, this set includes:

    • A $1 coin with a full color, Vatican-approved portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, along with the World Youth Day emblem
    • A 50 cent stamp featuring the Pope, with a unique first day of issue cancellation.
    • Both are housed in a color Australian Post souvenir illustrated envelope featuring the Pope!

The coin in this set has a limited mintage of 100,000 worldwide, with a significantly lower number of PNC sets being assembled

Obverse
A full color portrait of Pope Benedict XVI. The World Youth Day Sydney 2008 (abbreviated WYDSYD08) logo is emblazoned on the obverse as well. The legend around the rim reads WORLD YOUTH DAY SYDNEY 2008. The Perth Mint "P" mint mark also appears.

Reverse
The reverse features Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II and the denomination also appear.
